If you’ve ever had to do a quick plumbing repair, chances are you’ve used SharkBite fittings. These push-to-connect fittings make life easier when you’re in a pinch. No soldering, no glue, no fuss. But what if you need to remove them?

Whether you’re replacing a section of pipe or just made a mistake (hey, we’ve all been there), removing SharkBite fittings can be just as simple, if you know what you’re doing.

What Are SharkBite Fittings?

SharkBite fittings are push-to-connect plumbing components that work with copper, PEX, CPVC, and PE-RT pipes. Inside, stainless steel teeth bite down on the pipe, and a rubber O-ring seals the connection. They’re perfect for quick fixes and remodels because they’re easy to install without tools.

But when it’s time to remove one, it helps to have the right technique, especially if you want to reuse the fitting or avoid damaging your pipe.

How to Uninstall SharkBite Fittings (The Right Way)

Method 1: Use a SharkBite Removal Tool

This is the easiest and most effective method. SharkBite makes two main removal tools: a small plastic disconnect clip and a more heavy-duty set of disconnect tongs.

Here’s how it works:

This method is fast, clean, and reduces the risk of damaging the fitting or pipe, especially useful if you’re planning to reuse the parts.

Method 2: Remove Without a Special Tool

Don’t have the official tool? No worries. Many people use common household items like an adjustable wrench, pliers, or even a flathead screwdriver to get the job done.

Here’s what to do:

This method works best when you apply firm, even pressure. Be patient and avoid yanking too hard; you want a clean release.

Common Issues (And How to Handle Them)

Stuck fittings? Try this:

SharkBite fittings can get a little stubborn, especially if they’ve been in place a while. But with a little patience and the right grip, they’ll come loose.

Can You Reuse SharkBite Fittings?

Yes, if the fitting and pipe are both in good condition. Look closely at the O-ring inside the fitting. If it’s still seated properly and shows no signs of wear, you’re good to go. Also check the pipe for scratches, dents, or gouges where the teeth made contact.

That said, for permanent or high-pressure applications, especially in Texas, where temperatures can swing hard, many pros recommend starting fresh with a new fitting for extra peace of mind.

Pro Safety Tips

Removing SharkBite fittings isn’t rocket science, but taking your time and doing it right makes a big difference.

Quick Checklist: Tool vs. No Tool

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, as long as the fitting and the pipe aren’t damaged. Just be sure to inspect them carefully before reinstalling.

Using the official SharkBite disconnect tool makes it a breeze. It’s small, inexpensive, and fits in tight spaces.

No problem. You can use an adjustable wrench, pliers, or even a flat screwdriver to press the collar and release the pipe.

It might be stuck due to debris, pressure in the line, or a deep grip from the grab ring. Try twisting the pipe slightly while applying even pressure.

In general, yes, but the more you remove and reuse them, the greater the chance of wear. Use fresh fittings for anything permanent or critical.

I have had two major jobs (requiring digging and underground work) done by On Point in the past two months. Both crews were extremely professional, gentlemanly even, and efficient hard workers. They go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. On Point is my new go-to plumbing company. Would give them 6 stars if that was an option.

We did an addition to our home and used on point plumbing for all the plumbing. I wish there were more stars to give than only 5. The first day the owner of the company was under my house which is not an easy space to be in and took care of phase one. His employees that came and proceeded with phase two were very respectful and courteous. We also had a new born baby at this time and these guys made sure to be as quiet as possible but still were done quickly and did a great job! I will recommend them to anyone that needs any plumbing service.

Dakota and Daniel did an amazing job!!! They were very professional, respectful, and thoroughly answered any questions I had. They came in ready and got the job done in a very timely manner. I was going to use them over the weekend, but decided to wait until the weekday and without hesitation squeezed us in. This is the second time I have used this company and will use them in the future!!

I was referred to On Point Plumbing by someone I trust, but I'm always cautious because you never know until you use the service yourself. I could not have been more pleased with the professionalism and expertise of the On Point Plumbing staff. Starting with Aubrey in the front office; Aubrey is the perfect first contact for ANY home service company. She always picked up the phone, and the one time I went to voicemail, she called me back within minutes. The scheduling and times she gave me were followed up with almost exact precision. And, just as promised, the technicians called 30 minutes before arrival. (And they were here on time.) I knew within minutes of talking to Red and Trevor that they knew exactly what they were doing. We had a quick discussion about the problem and they went to work on it right away. They also communicated with me during the process so there were no surprises! Red and Trevor are experts and it shows. They cut out the leaking pipe section so I could see exactly what was going on, they explained the solution and told me what the end result would be. Trevor gave me a complete update on the condition of the other plumbing under the house, with pictures. Red answered all my questions about my current issue and future house re-plumbing if needed. Red even offered financing possibilities. I could not be more pleased with my entire experience with On Point Plumbing. Their professionalism would be the envy of any other home service company. Their customer service from top to bottom is one to emulate. Last, but not least, their pricing was very fair and reasonable. They're worth every penny! Thanks again for your service and I look forward to doing business with you again in the future.

My experience has been great! On Point went above and beyond to get my water heater repaired. If you live in a remote area like Comanche, TX and have a Home Warranty Provider (HWP), you will understand there are some repairs the HWP can not find Pro Contractors to provide repairs. If you can labor through the HWP process, you will eventually be authorized to find your own Pro Contractor, like On Point. While good, the HWP processed are frustrating and will require your Pro Contractor to call the HWP for authorization. This process along with HWP payment delays is a reason many Pro Contractors choose not to work with a HWP. When I found On Point, they listened to my problem and offered to call the HWP, providing the details needed for repair authorization (detailed information on code upgrades and labor estimates). Once I got confirmation from the HWP for authorization to pay the replacement, I gave On Point approval to proceed. On Point replaced the water heater that same day! All is good and my experience a memorable one! On Point gets a 5+.

I had a fantastic experience with On Point Plumbing when they came out to fix a bathtub leak in my Brownwood, TX home. The team was incredibly professional, arriving on time and fully prepared. They quickly diagnosed the problem and explained the necessary repairs in a clear and understandable way to someone that does not know anything about plumbing. The work was completed efficiently and with great attention to detail. I'm thrilled with the results and would highly recommend On Point Plumbing to anyone in need of reliable and professional plumbing services. Top-notch work, thank you
