So your toilet won’t stop running. It hisses, gurgles, or trickles hours after you flush, and now your water bill is climbing for no good reason. Sound familiar? If you’re in Zephyr, TX, or nearby in Houston, you’re not the only one dealing with this.

The good news? Most running toilet issues are easy to fix without calling in a professional. With these trusted toilet repair tips, you can tackle the problem yourself. But ignoring it can lead to some pretty frustrating water waste and surprise bills. Let’s walk through what’s going wrong and how you can take care of it yourself.

Why is a Constantly Running Toilet annoying?

First, let’s talk damage. A single running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. That adds up to over 6,000 gallons a month, which often means a noticeably higher water bill. If you’ve been searching for answers because you noticed a sudden spike in your bill, this is likely the culprit.

This isn’t just about saving money (though that’s a big part of it). It’s about stopping the waste and taking care of your home.

What Causes a Toilet to Run Nonstop?

Most of the time, it’s something small inside the tank. Here are the five main troublemakers:

1. Worn Out Flapper

The flapper is that rubber piece at the bottom of your tank. It lifts when you flush, letting water into the bowl, then closes to stop the flow. Over time, flappers can warp, crack, or get coated in gunk, causing a poor seal. If water keeps slipping past, the tank never fills correctly and keeps running.

How to check: Press gently on the flapper. If the noise stops, it’s not sealing properly. You may need to clean it or replace it.

2. Chain Is Too Tight or Too Loose

That little chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper can cause trouble if it’s tangled, too short, or too long. A chain that’s too tight might lift the flapper too much. One that’s too loose may not lift it at all, or it may stop it from sealing when the tank is refilling.

Tip: The chain should have just a bit of slack, not hanging too low, not pulling tight.

3. The Float Is Set Too High

Your toilet has a float that controls when the water shuts off. If the float is too high, the tank overfills, and water starts pouring into the overflow tube, which keeps the fill valve running.

You want the water to stop about 1 to 1.5 inches below the top of the overflow tube. If it’s higher, adjust the float.

For older toilets with a float ball, you can bend the arm down slightly. On newer ones, adjust the float cup using the screw or clip on the side of the fill valve.

4. Faulty Fill Valve

If the fill valve is worn out or clogged, it might not shut off correctly. That keeps the water running even when everything else looks fine. Sometimes you can clean it out, but often it’s easier to replace it.

This part isn’t expensive, and most home improvement stores carry universal replacement kits that are pretty easy to install.

5. Overflow Tube Problems

If the water is constantly flowing into the overflow tube, your toilet will never stop running. This usually ties back to either the float or a fill valve that isn’t regulating the water correctly. But sometimes, the tube itself may be cracked or misaligned.

Step-by-Step Fix: Stop the Running Toilet Repair

How Much Water Is Being Wasted?

Still not sure if it’s worth the hassle? Here’s the reality: a running Toilet Repair can add $70 to $200 or more to your monthly water bill, depending on local rates and how long it goes unnoticed. That’s why this isn’t just a plumbing issue, it’s a money issue.

And for homeowners in Zephyr, TX, or Houston, dealing with high water bills and plumbing problems, using trusted toilet repair tips can help stop one of the most common causes before it drains your wallet.

How to Prevent It in the Future

When Should You Call a Pro?

If you’ve tried adjusting the flapper, chain, float, and valve, and your toilet still runs, it might be time to call a plumber. Also, if you’re seeing cracks in the tank, slow leaks, or pooling water around the base, don’t wait.

Professionals who handle toilet repair in Zephyr, T,X can usually diagnose and fix the issue in one visit. And they’ll let you know if it’s something simple or if it might be time to upgrade an old toilet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honestly, just a few days can rack up a huge water waste. The sooner you stop it, the better.

Most repairs don’t require anything more than your hands. A pair of pliers or scissors might help adjust chains or remove old parts.

While it’s not as serious as a burst pipe, constant water can wear down seals, create moisture issues, and raise your utility costs.

Then it’s likely the fill valve or float is causing issues. Those are also replaceable and not very expensive.

If you’re renting, it’s usually your landlord’s responsibility. But letting them know right away helps you avoid paying for extra water use.

I have had two major jobs (requiring digging and underground work) done by On Point in the past two months. Both crews were extremely professional, gentlemanly even, and efficient hard workers. They go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. On Point is my new go-to plumbing company. Would give them 6 stars if that was an option.

We did an addition to our home and used on point plumbing for all the plumbing. I wish there were more stars to give than only 5. The first day the owner of the company was under my house which is not an easy space to be in and took care of phase one. His employees that came and proceeded with phase two were very respectful and courteous. We also had a new born baby at this time and these guys made sure to be as quiet as possible but still were done quickly and did a great job! I will recommend them to anyone that needs any plumbing service.

I was going to use them over the weekend, but decided to wait until the weekday and without hesitation squeezed us in. I was referred to On Point Plumbing by someone I trust, but I'm always cautious because you never know until you use the service yourself. I could not have been more pleased with the professionalism and expertise of the On Point Plumbing staff. Starting with Aubrey in the front office; Aubrey is the perfect first contact for ANY home service company. She always picked up the phone, and the one time I went to voicemail, she called me back within minutes. The scheduling and times she gave me were followed up with almost exact precision. And, just as promised, the technicians called 30 minutes before arrival. (And they were here on time.) I knew within minutes of talking to Red and Trevor that they knew exactly what they were doing. We had a quick discussion about the problem and they went to work on it right away. They also communicated with me during the process so there were no surprises! Red and Trevor are experts and it shows. They cut out the leaking pipe section so I could see exactly what was going on, they explained the solution and told me what the end result would be. Trevor gave me a complete update on the condition of the other plumbing under the house, with pictures. Red answered all my questions about my current issue and future house re-plumbing if needed. Red even offered financing possibilities. I could not be more pleased with my entire experience with On Point Plumbing. Their professionalism would be the envy of any other home service company. Their customer service from top to bottom is one to emulate. Last, but not least, their pricing was very fair and reasonable. They're worth every penny! Thanks again for your service and I look forward to doing business with you again in the future.

My experience has been great! On Point went above and beyond to get my water heater repaired. If you live in a remote area like Comanche, TX and have a Home Warranty Provider (HWP), you will understand there are some repairs the HWP can not find Pro Contractors to provide repairs. If you can labor through the HWP process, you will eventually be authorized to find your own Pro Contractor, like On Point. While good, the HWP processed are frustrating and will require your Pro Contractor to call the HWP for authorization. This process along with HWP payment delays is a reason many Pro Contractors choose not to work with a HWP. When I found On Point, they listened to my problem and offered to call the HWP, providing the details needed for repair authorization (detailed information on code upgrades and labor estimates). Once I got confirmation from the HWP for authorization to pay the replacement, I gave On Point approval to proceed. On Point replaced the water heater that same day! All is good and my experience a memorable one! On Point gets a 5+.

I had a fantastic experience with On Point Plumbing when they came out to fix a bathtub leak in my Brownwood, TX home. The team was incredibly professional, arriving on time and fully prepared. The work was completed efficiently and with great attention to detail. I'm thrilled with the results and would highly recommend On Point Plumbing to anyone in need of reliable and professional plumbing services. Top-notch work, thank you
